Comets have intrigued man since antiquity. Mankind has also been fearful of the glowing object in the sky. Depending on each
person beliefs, comets could forecast trouble times or predict victory in war. Many believed that comets were dragons. The
fear of comets was not limited to medieval times as a panic ensued in the United States in 1910 when scientists created their
own myth and pronounced that Halley's Comet tail contained poisonous cyanogens gas. The Native Americans were also very superstitious
of comets and believed that the comets provided protection or predicted the death of a great leader. Unpredictability was
the main reason why people feared comets. People knew that the Sun and the Moon would appear each day and night but comets
would seem to appear out of nowhere.
